Objectives

The Degree in Biotechnology course of study at the National University of Quilmes aims at applying technology on microorganisms, animal and plant cells, or on their derivatives, for the production of goods and services.

The UNQ specially emphasizes the relationship between the students’ education and the world of biological production (industry, agriculture) or other sectors that make use of Biotechnology (environment care, chemical industries, mining).

Program

In order to receive the Degree in Biotechnology, students must earn a minimum of 310 credits, by means of subjects passed in accordance with this chart:
:: Diploma in Science and Technology subjects (150 credits)
:: Higher level, compulsory basic subjects (72 credits)
:: Specialization level chosen subjects (a minimum of 68 credits)
:: Complementary level chosen subjects from the Diploma in Science and Technology course of study (a maximum of 20 credits)

Students will receive a Degree with a major after passing a thesis or equivalent work.

Majors

This course of study offers two majors: Molecular Genetics and Bioprocesses.
:: Major in Molecular Genetics
The new molecular genetics methodologies make it possible to develop products that are not found in natural resources, and to design them according to the required properties. They also provide alternative forms of development for the manufacturing of existing products.

In order to receive this major degree, students must earn 68 credits from the Cellular and Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, and Microbiology and Immunology areas of study.
:: Major in Bioprocesses
The combined knowledge of biological issues (Genetics, Biochemistry and Cellular Physiology) and technological issues (equipment and operations that optimize biological variables) provides a remarkable insertion in the areas of development, production and quality assurance of industrial plants, pharmaceutical laboratories, food industries, waste treatment plants, among others.

In order to receive this major degree, students must earn 68 credits from the Bioprocesses, Biochemistry, and Microbiology and Immunology areas of study.

Graduate Students Education

Graduate students with a Degree in Biotechnology receive an interdisciplinary education, based on Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Engineering, Economy, Law and Ethics knowledge, necessary to practice their profession with responsibility and integrity.

Biotechnologists can practice their profession in development, production and quality assurance laboratories, as well as in industries related to Medicine, Chemistry, Pharmacy, Veterinary Science, Agronomy, Food, and Environment, among others.
